The Dunwich Horror

1929

In the decayed Massachusetts township of Dunwich, the albino Lavinia Whateley bears a goatish, uncannily precocious son, Wilbur, to an unseen father; as Wilbur ransacks library after library for the Necronomicon and his monstrous, invisible twin swells within the sealed Whateley farmhouse, scholars from Miskatonic University piece together the truth and climb Sentinel Hill to drive the horror back beyond the threshold Yog-Sothoth had opened.

Engraved plate of the spell on Sentinel Hill: tiny figures among standing stones on a bare summit, the middle one with arms raised under a stroke of lightning, watched from the shadowed road below by a huddled crowd with a telescope — and nothing visible where the horror is
Plate VIII The spell on the summit, seen from the road below, drawn after the text:One figure, he said, seemed to be raising its hands above its head at rhythmic intervals; and as Sawyer mentioned the circumstance the crowd seemed to hear a faint, half-musical sound from the distance, as if a loud chant were accompanying the gestures. The Dunwich Horror (1929) — Chapter 10
