Zenas
otherZenas, Nahum Gardner's oldest son, grew increasingly vacant as the horror on the farm intensified, eventually vanishing; his skeletal remains were later found in the well beside his brother Merwin's.
Zenas, Nahum's oldest son, cut down the blasphemous-looking roses, zinnias, and hollyhocks that had grown in the front yard. By October he had come to do nothing but stare into space and obey his broken father's simple orders, a blank mental state Ammi considered mercifully numbed against the horror around him.
He vanished without explanation; his father's only answer when questioned was "In the well—he lives in the well—". His skeletal remains were later recovered from the well alongside his brother Merwin's, the investigators unable to explain what madness had led both boys to jump in.
