The Festival

1925

Summoned by the old faith of his fathers, a young man comes to snow-hung, sea-fogged Kingsport for a Yuletide rite kept once a century: led from a worm-gnawed house down beneath the white church to a green-litten cavern on an oily subterranean river, he watches the silent townsfolk mount trained hybrid winged things — and the Necronomicon he wakes to at St. Mary's hints his waxen-faced hosts were long dead.

Engraved plate of the Yule-rite: a cavern of titan toadstools where hooded figures ring a belching column of cold flame beside an oily river, watched by a lone man fallen to his knees
Plate IX The rite in the cavern under Kingsport, drawn after the text:I looked at that unhallowed Erebus of titan toadstools, leprous fire and slimy water, and saw the cloaked throngs forming a semicircle around the blazing pillar. The Festival (1925)
