Valparaiso was the port of departure of the Morrison Co.'s freighter Vigilant, which arrived at its wharf in Darling Harbour with the battled and disabled steam yacht Alert in tow.
The Vigilant left Valparaiso on March 25th, and on April 2d was driven considerably south of her course by exceptionally heavy storms and monster waves — the deviation that put her in the way of the derelict and her lone survivor.
