tornasuk
deityTornasuk groenlandicus—Supreme elder devil of the ice
The supreme elder devil to whom the degenerate Eskimo cult of Greenland addressed queer hereditary rituals, besides nameless rites and human sacrifices.
The name survives only in transcription: Professor Webb took a careful phonetic copy of one such ritual from an aged angekok, or wizard-priest, expressing the sounds in Roman letters as best he knew how.
The devil itself is never described. It is known by what is addressed to it — nameless rites, human sacrifices, and the hereditary chants that carried the word down.

Every fact above traces back to the text.
“Besides nameless rites and human sacrifices there were certain queer hereditary rituals addressed to a supreme elder devil or tornasuk; and of this Professor Webb had taken a careful phonetic copy from an aged angekok or wizard-priest, expressing the sounds in Roman letters as best he knew how.”
