Tornasuk groenlandicusSupreme elder devil of the ice

Fig. 2 — Bestiarium

The supreme elder devil to whom the degenerate Eskimo cult of Greenland addressed queer hereditary rituals, besides nameless rites and human sacrifices.

The name survives only in transcription: Professor Webb took a careful phonetic copy of one such ritual from an aged angekok, or wizard-priest, expressing the sounds in Roman letters as best he knew how.

The devil itself is never described. It is known by what is addressed to it — nameless rites, human sacrifices, and the hereditary chants that carried the word down.

Every fact above traces back to the text.

  • Besides nameless rites and human sacrifices there were certain queer hereditary rituals addressed to a supreme elder devil or tornasuk; and of this Professor Webb had taken a careful phonetic copy from an aged angekok or wizard-priest, expressing the sounds in Roman letters as best he knew how.
