A vast, Polyphemus-like sea creature that rose from the depths of a sunken chasm to embrace the great monolith, uttering strange measured sounds, and which may have later stalked the narrator to his door.
The creature rose to the surface of the flooded chasm with only a slight churning of the water, revealing itself as vast, Polyphemus-like, and loathsome. It darted toward the great monolith like a stupendous monster of nightmare, flung its gigantic scaly arms about the stone, bowed its hideous head, and gave vent to certain measured sounds, apparently in a form of worship or communion with the ancient carved idol.
At the close of the narrator's account, an immense slippery body is heard lumbering against his door, suggesting the creature — or one like it — had tracked him to his refuge.
