Joseph D. Galvez, an excitable Spaniard, was one of the men on the raid against the swamp ritual. It may have been only imagination or echoes, but he fancied he heard antiphonal responses to the chant from some far and unillumined spot deeper within that wood of ancient legendry and horror, and went so far as to hint of the faint beating of great wings, and of a glimpse of shining eyes and a mountainous white bulk beyond the remotest trees.
The narrator later met and questioned him; he proved distractingly imaginative, and the narrator supposed he had been hearing too much native superstition.
